The additional guarded area helps to prevent dust, debris and sparks from being thrown back towards the operator - as well as dangerous high speed fragments in the event that an accessory breaks while in use. The attachment has been designed for minimal disruption to the line of sight, and is easy to remove whenever it isn't needed.
